You Might Be an Expat…

-if for at least a week and maybe even a few months after your move, you couldn’t shake the feeling that you were living on a strange, new planet
-if you’ve ever gone back to your home and been almost paralyzed by the number of choices of items at the grocery store
-if you’ve ever skipped happily through the aisles of Target and ended up spending an embarrassing sum of money there
-if your list of things to buy while visiting home is longer than the length of your arm
-if the list of restaurants to visit and junk food to buy while home is also longer than the length of your arm
-if you’ve ever traveled back home with full suitcases nestled inside of empty, larger suitcases
-if you’ve ever had to purchase new luggage while home, just to accommodate everything you bought while you were visiting
-if your full suitcases, returning “home” consistently weigh exactly 50 lbs and you own your own personal, travel luggage scale
-if you have ever made a secret, silent bargain with God, hoping to get the “green light” at customs
-if you have trouble sometimes remembering words in your native language
-if you find yourself with the ability to curse fluently in more than one language
-if you’ve ever cried on your way back “home”
-if you’ve become certain that it is indeed possible to function and perhaps even thrive with your heart and your body in different countries
