Code Word

Do you have a code word? That is, do you and your spouse have a code word? A word that means “change the subject” “shut-up” or “let’s get the F out of here!”? I’m not talking about a safety word, people–this isn’t that kind of blog. ;0)

I was recently at a party and one of my friends brought up this subject. After much prodding, she told me her code word. It was something or rather a name that was a bit crazy.
“What? How would you work that into a conversation?” I asked.
“I don’t, I just say it and that’s it,” she responded.
Granted, the woman has a pretty thick and beautiful accent and when she said the name, or initials rather, it sounded as if it were just another foreign word that she’d easily woven into the conversation. I found myself wondering if I’d heard this word before, sitting at dinner perhaps with her and her husband….

Her husband passed by on his way to the bathroom,
“look Love, we are going to have to change our code word. I’ve given it away,” she said.
He just rolled his eyes and laughed. “I don’t know what she’s taking about,” he claimed.
Then he said it too. LOL And, I was left wondering, did he just say it to be funny or did it have an underlying meaning at that particular moment that only she knew?

A code word, what a fantastic idea!  Why hadn’t my husband and I thought of that year’s ago? Think of all of the misery we could have saved ourselves, the bruised shins we both could have avoided from kicking each other under the table, not to mention the after party “discussions” over the years. I found myself wondering if we had one, what it would be. Jelly bean? Timbuktu? Elvis?
-Husband starts to tell everyone where you get your hair colored? “ELVIS”
-You are about to answer someone when they ask you how much you paid for your house…”ELVIS”
-Your husband drinks too much at a party? “ELVIS”
-Someone starts taking about sex, religion, or politics? “ELVIS, ELVIS, ELVIS!!”

What a great idea! Why haven’t I heard of this before? Going to get on it right away. So, if you hear me yell out “John Luc Piccard” at my husband, from across a crowded room at the next party we attend together, think nothing of it and I promise to do the same for you.
