Things I Learned While Quarantined With My 4 Year Old for a Week

Last week, my youngest daughter and I were both diagnosed with influenza type A. Apparently this particular type of flu is very contagious. There seems to be an epidemic here right now. In an effort to not get everyone else in our house sick, our doctor suggested that my daughter and I stay quarantined in my room for 5-7 days. That’s right, 5-7 days!!
Before I say anymore, I must say that I realize I am very very lucky that it was even possible for us to consider doing this. I have a large room with a sitting area and tv and a desk area with a computer and we have a lovely view outside. And, we are lucky enough to live in a place where we can afford help, so there was someone delivering meals outside our room and keeping my other daughter alive and keeping the house running, in general. Thank God!

Still, we’ve never had the “opportunity” before to spend sooooo much time together. So, here are a few things I learned, about both myself and my daughter, during our time together:

-she can do a summer sault–which she did about 150 times a day on my bed–shouting “look mom” every time–even when I was already looking right at her.
-she is VERY bossy
-she likes to dance, but only if she leads (see above)
-her depth perception is not the greatest
(Hit me in the face with toys more than once)
-she is kind of obsessed with trying to touch my boobs, for some strange reason
Her: “But Mommy, when will I get MY boobies?”
Me:  “Hold your horses, crazy girl.  You’ll get them soon enough.”
-when she gets frustrated with a toy, she might just jump on it in an attempt to beat it into submission, rather than ask for help
-there is a very thin line between my being “the best mom ever” and “the worst mom ever” and it has something to do with choosing good cookies and having to set limits on how many of those cookies she can eat
-she likes for me to watch her EVERY second
“Mom, watch this, watch this, watch this”
Me thinking: “Um yeah, there’s nothing else to do here, honey”
-she isn’t very good at taking turns–as evidenced by the 1 hour per day that I insisted on watching grown up tv, during which she complained the entire time, even while she was playing with toys she very much likes to play with
-I cannot leave a closed bottle of nail polish unattended in her presence for the time it takes for me to pee, or she will try to paint “gloves” on her hands
–She loves make up and might just be a tad OCD–putting on lipstick for 3 minutes straight
Me: “Really honey, I think that’s enough”
Her: “No! Never!”
-she is still too young to have gum and didn’t my know not to put her hair in her mouth at the same time as gum
(So, she now has a new haircut)
-I am not allowed to read a book or look at my phone while she is watching a Disney movie, I MUST watch it with her!
-she can go exactly 2 and a 1/2 days without having a complete meltdown at being quarantined, I on the other hand can go 4
-she thinks it’s hilarious to lick my face when I am least expecting it
-she talks in her sleep, just like her sister
(I wonder on the speak the same language)
-she knows how to use the mouse on our computer and apparently knows how to print out coloring sheets from PBS Kids as well–lots and lots of them
-she looks like an angel when she is asleep
-she still wakes up slowly, like she did when she was a baby, when she is allowed to wake up with no schedule
-I have an unbelievable level of tolerance for Disney movies!
And finally, something I knew, but it’s always interesting when life gives me an opportunity to prove it…
I love my daughter and would do anything for her!

  1. I liked your post: it flows, it’s fun and, most important, shows the amazing character that Elens is. Congrats!
